Increasing grid reference precision matters because it directly narrows the area you must search, speeding up the response and increasing the chances of locating the subject quickly. A six-digit coordinate pins a location to a 100 m square, whereas a four-digit coordinate only defines a 1 km square. In SAR, reducing the search area from 1 km to 100 m means every team—ground, air, and navigation—can be directed to a much smaller zone, making the search more efficient and reducing time and resources spent.

This precision also improves communication. When you relay a precise grid reference, there’s less ambiguity about the target location, which helps different units coordinate their movements and actions accurately. It’s not about slowing navigation or eliminating field notes; notes are still valuable for situational awareness, and grid precision is a tool that enhances navigation, planning, and teamwork. It’s also not limited to printing maps; precise coordinates are used in real-time for directing teams and assets on the ground and in the air.
